Beer League
Beer League” is a colloquial term for amateur ice hockey leagues, where beer is consumed after (and sometimes before) a game. The skill levels run the gamut between nearly professional to nearly just started. Regardless of skill level, the confluence of masculinity, competition, and intimacy find a way to equalize the experience.
Each of these photographs is printed on the backside of a carbon-copy score sheet--a written record of each game. These scoresheets document when and where the game was played, who played, how many shoes were taken, who scored and when, who assisted each goal, and lastly, who was sent to the penalty box and what for. In many games, the penalty list can tell more of the story than the score.
The mixture of boyhood-like connection in the midst of a violent game creates a unique opportunity to examine behavior. The following photographs were taken over a 4-year period, where I played right wing for two Chicagoland teams: The Meatwads and The Wolfpack.
